Rummy is a popular card game with a huge following. And due to its popularity, the online game has various variants, such as pool rummy, points rummy, rummy 500, etc. However, learning a rummy game can be tricky for beginners.

Hence, this blog will explain the simplified steps for playing a rummy card game online.

Objective of Rummy Card Game

The objective of rummy is to meld or put cards on the table in two primary types of combinations:

  • Sequence or Runs: A sequence is three cards or more of the same suit coupled in consecutive order, such as 2♥, 3♥ and 4♥, or 8♣, 9♣, 10♣ and J♣. Such a combination of cards is defined as a pure sequence. An impure sequence is formed with a joker.
  • Sets: A set can be formed in rummy when three or four cards of the same rank, such as 6♥, 6♣, and 6♦ are grouped. So, if you have 3 or more same-rank cards in your hand, a set can be formed.

How to Play a Rummy Game Online?

  • In a rummy game, each player is dealt 10 – 13 cards, depending on the variant and number of players.
    • For a 2, 3 or 4-player rummy game, each contender gets 10-13 cards.
    • When there are 5 players, then each contender gets 6 cards.
    • If there are more than 5 players in a game, then you need to use two decks and a hand of 7 cards is given to each person.
  • The cards are distributed among players and the undealt cards are placed face down as the deck pile in the centre of the table. The top card from the deck pile is placed beside it, facing upwards, forming the discard pile.
  • The player who sits on the left side of the dealer needs to play first. They can either pick a card from the deck or discard pile. If the picked card can be chosen for a sequence or set, the player will need to put down a card from their hand to maintain the original number of cards they were dealt. If the picked card can not be used, it can be placed on the discard pile and the chance of play moves to the next player.
  • The next player has the choice to pick either the discard card from the previous player or a fresh card from the deck and he same process is followed. If the card is useful it is kept and another card is discarded, if it isn’t, the picked card is discarded.
  • The play goes on like this in a clockwise direction until the winner is finalised. If, in between, the deck runs out, then the discard pile is shuffled and used as the deck pile.
  • The first player who melds all their cards into valid combinations of sets and sequences and declares first wins the rummy game and is awarded zero points.
  • Losing players get their points calculated based on the number of ungrouped cards they have. The maximum number of penalty points anyone can get is 80. So if your ungrouped cards add up to a score higher than 80 you will still only get 80 points.
