What is Oklahoma Rummy?

This game (also called Arlington) is said to have originated in the USA, from a variation called Fortune Rummy. It became popular in the Midwest before spreading to other parts of the world.

The objective of this game is to:

  • Form valid melds or card combinations
  • Discard all of your cards.

Oklahoma Rummy doesn’t have a set number of rounds or hands, unlike other Rummy variations

The game continues until one player has:

  • Discarded all their cards
  • Accumulated 100 points

Rules of Oklahoma Rummy

As with any game, you should understand the various rules of Oklahoma Rummy before you play this game by downloading the Rummy game apk from our website. This knowledge will help you avoid making silly mistakes later on.

Setting Up the Game

Two to four players can play this game. When two people play this game, each player gets ten cards. On the other hand, when three to four people play, each player gets seven cards.

The player who draws the lowest-value card deals. The remaining cards are kept face-down to form the stockpile. The topmost card is kept face-up to form the discard pile.

Playing a Round of Oklahoma Rummy

The player to the dealer’s immediate left starts the first round. They draw a card from the discard pile or stockpile.

After that, they have to discard one of their own cards. Afterwards, the game proceeds clockwise, with each player drawing or discarding a card from the stock/discard pile or their own, respectively.

You can draw or discard these cards to form valid sets or runs. There is no limit to the number of runs or sets you can meld in each round of Oklahoma Rummy.

Sets and Runs

A set is a meld or group of three or more cards that belong to the same suit or face value. For example, you have a valid set if you combine four Spades cards or three Number Seven cards.

A run is a meld or group of three plus consecutive cards that belong to the same suit. You get a valid run when you combine Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine of Hearts.

However, occasionally, you may not find one of the cards in a deck, or they may be missing. In such cases, you can use a Joker card* to replace this card and form an impure run.

*Note: When you use a Joker card to replace a card, the Joker will take on the value of that card. For example, you can use it to replace a Number Five Card. Then, the Joker card will carry five points.

For instance, if you use a Joker card to replace a Number Five Card, your impure run will look like this: Number Two Card, Number Three Card, Number Four, Joker. However, remember that you cannot use the Joker card to create a pure run.

Declaring a Hand

You can declare your hand in Oklahoma Rummy in one of three ways: gin, undercut and knocking.

Gin

You can use this term if you can meld all your cards by forming valid sets or runs. So, this term will denote that you’re done with your part of the game.

Undercut

Players use this particular term to refer to the situation or instance where the person who knocked hasn’t yet declared a gin. You can add your deadwood card to the knocker’s melds in such instances. You will win 10 points when you remove your deadwood cards.*

Note: Deadwood cards are unmatched cards you cannot use to form valid runs or sets.

Knocking

This term signals the end of your Oklahoma Rummy game since it indicates that you have created your desired number of melds and have 100 points. Remember that you cannot knock if you haven’t discarded a card, as per the rules of this game.

Additionally, if none of you can match your cards to the knocker’s card, then all of you will be assumed to have declared ‘gin’. You will win 20 points in this instance.

On the other hand, if your cards have fewer points than the knocker’s, you will win the difference between the values carried by the cards.

Calculating Your Scores in Oklahoma Rummy

After you’ve declared your hand and discarded all your cards, you should tally all your points.

The points carried by each card in this game are:

Type of CardValue Carried
Face Card (King, Queen, Jack/Joker)10 points*
(*Note: When a Joker is used to substitute a card, then it assumes the value of that card)
Ace1 point
Number Two to Number Nine2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

Key Strategies for Winning Oklahoma Rummy

If you’re a beginner to the game, you should first consider reading and understanding the rules carefully. For example, you should understand the difference between a set and a run and how to use the Joker card.

You should also understand when to draw or discard a card since this knowledge will be crucial to forming a valid meld (run or set).

Furthermore, you should learn to be flexible and not stick to a fixed type of meld in the initial rounds of the game. This will ensure that you can draw and discard cards accordingly.

Another thing you should learn is to map your opponent’s expressions and card-play in Oklahoma Rummy.

For example, if you have an incomplete meld of three Number Five cards, and they discard a Number Five card, you can draw it from the discard pile to complete it. We recommend grouping your cards by suits or ranks to be able to meld your cards faster.

The Final Word

As you can see, Oklahoma Rummy can be quite an engaging game once you master the basics. Additionally, if you know how to play Gin Rummy, you won’t take much time to understand this game.

Remember to play practice sessions before you play a live game of online Rummy. Furthermore, you should use mindfulness techniques like meditation and deep breathing before major tournaments to keep your cool.
