In Kaluki, each card has a distinct point value. These points help to calculate the value of melds. Each Ace card is valued at eleven points; all the face cards have ten points and the remaining cards have values similar to their face value. 

The game requires poker chips. When a player lays off all the cards, his opponents give him one chip for each unmelded card. If you manage to meld all your cards in one go, then opponents will give you two chips for each unmelded card. 

How to Play Kaluki: A Step-by-Step Guide

The game starts when the dealer finishes dealing all the cards to players. 

Starting the Game

The player immediately to the left of the dealer starts the game. He can draw from either stock or discard piles. Once the game starts, the player can meld his cards in the melds of other players as well. Cards melded in other players’ sequences will be counted in his score. 

Forming Melds

You can meld all your cards in sets and sequences by forming them in groups. These groups might have a combination of cards in three or four cards of the same rank. Alternatively, you can form a sequence of three or more cards of the same suit in an ascending or descending order.

Discarding to End a Turn

After you form a meld or even if you do not meld your cards, you have to discard one card from your hand. This marks the end of your turn. Then the next player plays his turn.  

Winning the Round  

Each meld must make a meld that is worth at least fifty-one points or more. Once you lay off all your cards you win the round and chips for the unmelded cards in your opponents’ hands. Alternatively, you get the points of all the unmelded cards and if you manage to reach a 250 score after a few rounds, you win the game.

It means the game is played for nine rounds and at each round the number of cards increases, except round five. At this round, the number of cards remains the same as the previous round. 

In the first round, each player gets 9 cards and it reaches 16 at the final round. 

European Kaluki  

European Kaluki can be played with points and after reaching a certain point, you become the winner. Besides, you have specific rules for melding where you need to meld cards of at least 51 points.
