There are many variants of Rummy games that you can find nowadays. Some include Kaluki, Gin Rummy, Oklahoma Rummy, Contract Rummy and Indian Rummy. Today, we’ll talk about Kaluki, which is played in Europe, The Caribbean and Africa.
What is Kaluki?
It is a game in which players need strategy and skill to win. It was devised by Air Jamaica flight attendants between the 1970s and 1980s. They based this game on the basics of Contract Rummy, though it has quite a few differences.
For instance, as you play each hand of Kaluki, you will require a fresh meld. This adds an interesting twist to the game. However, the basic objective of this game is still scoring a low score.
It also has versions called ‘Baby Kalooki’ and ‘Super Kalooki’ played in tournaments.
Now, let’s take a look at the rules of Kaluki below.
Kaluki can be played by a group of three to eight people and involves using two or more decks of cards. The quantity of card decks used is determined by the number of people playing it. Its basic objective is to lay down your cards after forming sets.
This game involves a total of nine rounds.
Playing The Game
A dealer is randomly selected from the players playing to start the game. Then, he/she deals 13 hole (face down) cards to each player. The remaining cards form the stockpile. One card is turned face up and kept next to the stockpile as the discard pile.
After that, you attempt to form valid melds for each of the nine hands or turns you play.
Sets & Runs
You can form sets by melding three or more cards with the same rank or suit, known as a “3”. For example, three Number 5 cards or four cards of the Spades suit.
Apart from that, you can also form a “4”, which is a run (meld) of four consecutive cards that belong to the same suit. You cannot use an Ace in the middle of the meld. For example, a series of Number Two, Number Three, Number Four and Number is a run.
Similarly, the Ace card, followed by the Number Two, Three and Four cards, also form a run. However, the combination of the King Card, Ace Card, Number Two, and Number Three card isn’t a run.
If any player puts down more than one “3” or “4”, the additional melds/runs should belong to a different rank or suit.
If you need to form three sets of “4”, you can use a set of same-suit cards as substitutes. You can also use the Joker card as a substitute for another card, provided you don’t use it in consecutive sets or two jokers in a “3”.
Scoring Points in Kaluki
Before you understand how to score in Kaluki, you must first understand that each card carries points as seen below.
Type of Card | Points it carries |
Joker | 50 |
Black Ace | 15 |
King, Queen and Jack | 10 |
Number Cards from Number Two to Number Ten | 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 |
Red Ace | 1 |
As per the rules of Kaluki, you need to accumulate a score of 40 points or less to win. For example, if you have a run of Red Ace, Number Two, Number Three and Number Four, then you will have accumulated 10 points.
If you accumulate more than 40 points (such as with the Joker card), you can lay down these runs or sets and draw more cards from the stockpile. You can use these cards to add to your opponent’s or your own cards.
Once you’ve discarded all your cards, the game ends. After that, you will have to calculate your scores. You can refer to our table above if you experience any confusion.
Key Strategies for Winning in Kaluki
After you’ve mastered the basic rules of Kaluki, it’s time to consider some expert tips and tricks with the help of which you can win the game.
Strategy 1 – Mastering the Use of Jokers
As in standard card games, the Joker card takes on the value of the card you use it as a substitute for. For instance, if you use a Joker to substitute a Number Five card, the Joker carries 5 points for that round or all rounds.
This depends on the card available to you. You should know that you cannot use jokers in consecutive sets or runs.
For example, you can use the Joker card to form a “3” of Number Five, Joker, and Number Seven. However, you cannot use it to form a run of Number Five, Joker, Joker and Number Eight.
This is why you should try substituting only one of the lower-value cards, such as those between Number Two and Number Five or Number Six. That’s because you’ll be able to form lower-value melds or runs and score a low number of points to win.
Strategy 2 – Understanding and Managing the Deck
After you’ve been dealt your cards, you should consider studying your opponents carefully. In other words, you should study the cards they discard and draw. If you see a card you want, you can “Call” those cards.
However, if the person whose card you want gives you that card, you’ll have to draw an additional card as a penalty.
So, you should make your decisions accordingly. For example, if you have a meld of Ace of Hearts (Number Two and Number Three) of Hearts, and your opponent is discarding Number Four of Hearts, then you can “call” for that card to form a valid run.
However, you’ll have to draw another card from the stockpile afterwards. This is why you should try to avoid “calling” unless necessary.
Strategy 3 – Playing Your Hand Based on Position
As per the rules of Kaluki, you can start the first round or hand if you’re on the dealer’s left. However, you’ll have to wait to play your turn if you’re not placed left of the dealer.
If you can’t start first, as we mentioned, you’ll have to study your opponents and the cards they discard.
This will help you decide which cards to meld.
