What are sequences?
Sets are formed using the same rank but a different suit J♥ J♣ J♦ and sequences are consecutive cards of the same suit- 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠. Forming strategic sequences helps you reduce points as well as aid in strategic discarding. To win a 13-card rummy, you need to build sequences and sets, which include two pure sequences, one pure sequence (first life), and one pure sequence with a wild joker (second life). The player who declares first with a valid arrangement wins. It is important to remember that a second life is invalid without a first life sequence in your stack. You will be penalised for it and earn penalty points for an invalid declaration.
Let’s explore what the different types of sequences are:
- Pure Sequence
- Impure Sequence
- Triples
- First Life
- Second Life
1. First Life:
A First Life rummy sequence is the first pure sequence to be formed without using a joker and with the cards at hand. Eg- 6♦ 7♦ 8♦ 9♦
2. Second Life:
A Second Life sequence is sometimes called an impure sequence as it uses a joker, for example: A♣ K♣ Q♣ Joker.
3. Pure rummy sequences:
A pure rummy sequence is a run or group of 3 or more cards in sequence of the same suit without the use of a joker. To win in rummy, a pure sequence is a must.
7❤-8❤-9❤ is a pure sequence of 3 consecutive from the heart’s suit. An alternative sequence without a joker is 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠, made up of four consecutive spade cards. Another pure rummy sequence type consists of five consecutive cards, 5♣-6♣-7♣-8♣-9♣, without the use of a joker.
4. Impure sequence:
In rummy, an impure rummy sequence is a string of 3 or more cards in a row from the same suit, but it can also include a joker. For example: – 7♥ – 8♥ – Joker; 7♠ 8♠ 9♠; 5♠ – 6♠ – Queen of Clubs (Q♣)- where the queen of clubs acts as a wild joker and is a replacement for 7. King of Diamonds (K♦) – Ace of Spades (A♠), – 2 of Spades (2♠): This sequence utilises a wild joker (K♦) to bridge the gap between non-consecutive spades (A♠ and 2♠).
5. Triples Rule in Rummy
A triple rummy sequence is formed with 3 cards of the same rank but different suits. A set of triples may be considered an impure sequence, as it may include a joker.
For example, A♦ A♠A♥ (pure rummy sequences/set) or 8♥ 8♣ J (replacement for 8) (pure rummy sequences/set).
